Ramayya Vastavayya Review : Riding on NTR’s magic

Commercial movies are the flavour of the season. It doesn’t matter what’s the story or whether there is novelty in the story. Producers are only focusing on whether there are enough commercially attractive elements to make it a success. These rules are applied with great dedication if its a star hero flick. The moment star hero comes into picture, hero’s image and fans expectations become the prime factors to be considered. Producers have come to a conclusion that if fans like it, then movie will become hit. As a result they are making movies according to the expectations of fans and filling it up with elements which will give kick for the fans. Ramayya Vasthavayya exactly falls in this category. It has been made keeping in view NTR’s star image and massive fan following. Let’s see to what extent Ramayya vasthavayya makers succeeded in this effort. Let’s find out whether NTR will be able to pull it off with his magic.
Ramu (NTR) is a college student. He is a happy go lucky guy who is more involved in street fights than in studies. He falls in Akarsha’s (Samantha) love and tries hard to impress her but without result. At last Akarsha accepts Ramu’s love. But there is a secret behind wooing Akarsha. It has to be seen on screen. How Ramu and Akarsha are related to Ammulu (Shruthi Hasan) is the twist which attracts in second half.
Ramayya vasthavayya story has all commercial elements. Besides to these commercially viable elements, twists are the main strength. Though story is normal, twists make it interesting. First half runs jollily. NTR’s introduction, college scenes, Samantha teasing scenes, are all enjoyable. Story runs with songs, fights, entertainment mixed in equal proportions. Twist before interval increases expectations about second half.
This type of movies depend on second half to a great extent. But director faltered here. He did not have enough substance to run movie after revealing twists in the second half. He has once again banked on Gabbar Singh’s Anthyakshari batch and Venky type of comedy. As result second half runs with tempo falling and rising occasionally. After Ammulu’s entry, movie once again gains josh. The story and emotions behind Ammulu character are the prime strengths of RV movie. Movie ends with high octane action scenes in the climax.
NTR is the main highlight and sole asset of the movie. He has exhibited all his talent in the movie and took complete responsibility in taking it forward. Right from fights, dances, dialogues to matured and emotional performance, to experimenting a bit with teasing scenes, NTR has single handedly shouldered Ramayya Vasthavayya movie. He has excelled in emotional scenes during the later stages of the film. Also NTR appeared very handsome in this flick. Nandamuri Young tiger has once again proved that he is a performer par excellence. He is the oxygen for this movie. Samantha as usually appeared beautiful. Chota captured the beauty of Sam much beautifully. Shruthi Hasan’s is a small role but very important role. Others like Mukesh Rishi and Ravishankar are ok.
The whole movie rests on a small twist. NTR is not just a star but also a good actor. He can easily make a movie super hit even if story is normal. But that does not mean that a star can pull off any sort of story. Harish Shankar impressed in first half. But second half dulls a bit. For all those who say that Gabbar Singh was hit because of Pawan Kalyan and not because of Harish Shankar, this movie will add strength to their argument.
Thaman’s music is ok. ‘Jabili nuvve cheppama’ song is picturised extremely well. Chota’s cinematography deserves praise. Second half should have been trimmed. Harish is known for one line dialogues . But he hasn’t done much in this flick. He could have made better use of a star like NTR who has excellent dialogue delivery. This is a normal story. NTR’s magic is the main asset. NTR fans will be impressed. As this is Dussera season and there are no other competing movies Ramayya Vasthavayya may smile through its way.
